What wine gives humanity
The culture of the vine and wine, rooted in the South Caucasus, spread throughout the Mediterranean world - to Greece and Rome, and from there to different parts of Europe and, eventually, many regions across the globe. Alongside wine, trade routes developed, cities took shape, works of art were created, and laws were written.
Throughout different eras, wine served both as a medicine and as a ceremonial drink. It was associated with the cult of Dionysus, the philosophical conversations of the ancient Greek symposium, and the sacred mystery of Christian Communion. Few things have left such a lasting and multifaceted mark on human culture.
One of the oldest chapters of this vast history, still known to us today, can be traced right here, to the Neolithic settlements of Kvemo Kartli - in traces preserved in clay vessels that brought the story of winemaking some eight thousand years ago to the attention of modern science.
