Georgia, homeland of wine and vine
For eight thousand years the vine has grown in this soil, and wine still ferments in clay the ancient way. Descend - from the roots to the supra, and from the supra to the whole world.
Roots
The story of wine begins on two hills in Kvemo Kartli - Gadachrili Gora and Shulaveris Gora. Residues of wine in the clay jars of Neolithic farmers date to around 6000 BC: the oldest known evidence of grape winemaking anywhere in the world.
Clay
Georgians make wine not in barrels but in the qvevri - a large clay vessel lined with beeswax and buried in the earth up to its neck. The grapes ferment there with their skins and stems, while the ground keeps a steady cool all year round.
Vine & Cross
.In the 4th century, Saint Nino came to Kartli to preach Christianity, carrying a cross made from vine branches. Through her preaching, Christianity spread throughout Georgia, and the Grapevine Cross became a symbol of faith. With the spread of Christianity, the ancient Georgian symbolism of the vine gained a new spiritual meaning. Its image became deeply rooted in church carvings, prayers, and hymns, making the vine an inseparable part of Georgia’s faith and national identity.
The Supra
In Georgian culture, the story of wine is incomplete without the supra - the traditional Georgian feast. The supra is a space where wine becomes conversation. Led by the tamada, or toastmaster, the feast finds its rhythm through toasts that bring people together. A toast may honor the memory of ancestors, celebrate life, express wishes for family well-being and friendship, or convey hopes for peace and faith in the future.
The World
The history of wine extends beyond Georgia’s borders, forming part of humanity’s shared cultural heritage. Georgia is one of the world’s oldest centers of winemaking, home to more than 500 indigenous grape varieties. Its traditional qvevri winemaking method continues to inspire winemakers around the world. Rooted in the past, Georgia’s winemaking heritage reminds us that ancient traditions can also shape the future.
Gaumarjos!
The words “Gagimarjos, Gaumarjos” are an enduring part of Georgian toasting tradition. At the Georgian supra, wine is most often raised to celebrate another person’s life, happiness, and victory.
