The vine and the cross
In Georgia, the vine and faith have been intertwined for centuries. A plant that once symbolized life and fertility also became a symbol of Christianity. We descend into the layer where the vine took on spiritual meaning.
A vine branch
According to tradition, Saint Nino, who came from Cappadocia, took two vine branches…
Laid into a cross
…and shaped them into a cross. The arms of Saint Nino’s cross curve slightly downward, as if the vine were yielding to its own weight.
Bound with hair
…She then bound the cross with her own hair. Add the final twist yourself.
Saint Nino’s cross
Saint Nino preached in Mtskheta with this cross. In the 4th century, Christianity was declared the state religion of the Kingdom of Kartli.

According to tradition, Saint Nino, who came from Cappadocia, shaped two vine branches into a cross and bound them together with her own hair. She preached in Mtskheta with this cross. Following the conversion of King Mirian and Queen Nana, Christianity was declared the state religion of the Kingdom of Kartli in the 4th century.
Saint Nino’s Cross is easily recognized by its arms, which curve slightly downward, as if the vine branches were yielding to their own weight. According to ecclesiastical tradition, this sacred relic is preserved today at Sioni Cathedral in Tbilisi.
Thou Art a Vineyard”
The 12th-century hymn Shen Khar Venakhi - “Thou Art a Vineyard,” traditionally attributed to King Demetre I, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In the hymn, the Virgin Mary is likened to a flourishing vineyard and a young vine planted in Eden, both symbols of holiness and divine grace.
შენ ხარ ვენახი, ახლად აყვავებული, ნორჩი კეთილი, ედემს შინა ნერგული…Thou art a vineyard, newly blossomed, a young shoot, fair, planted in Eden…„შენ ხარ ვენახი“, XII ს.“Shen Khar Venakhi”, 12th c.
This hymn remains one of the most beloved and widely performed works of Georgian sacred music. In its verses, the vine becomes a symbol of holiness, spiritual beauty, and divine grace.
The vine carved in stone
Vine shoots, leaves, and grape clusters are among the distinctive motifs of Georgian stone carving. They appear on early Christian basilicas, such as the 5th-century Bolnisi Sioni, as well as on medieval churches, including the 11th-century Samtavisi Cathedral.
The vine carved into church façades evokes the Tree of Life and the heavenly garden, recalling Christ’s words: “I am the true vine.” Spreading across the stone, its branches seem to climb the walls, transforming the church into a living vineyard.
Wine, communion and feast
In the Christian Eucharist, wine is consecrated as the Blood of Christ and is part of the Holy Mystery of Communion. This is why wine is treated with deep reverence in Georgian Christian culture. Monasteries continue to preserve the winemaking tradition, producing wine in qvevri - large clay vessels buried in the ground.
In Kakheti, near the 11th-century Alaverdi Cathedral, the Alaverdoba festival is celebrated in late September. This religious and folk celebration brings together Christian traditions and ancient customs associated with the harvest. Here, prayer, the fruits of the land, and centuries-old traditions come together in a single celebration.
